Consolidate by making a project an ...

When I started using Aperture, I imported a set of photos and made each a project, not smart.

Can I take a project make it an album ?
No,changes just turn it into an album, I can then move into consolidated projects.

I always feel I'm missing something obvious, am I ?

Thanks

Automating the Auto Levels process ...

As part of my work flow after importing the files into Aperture and applying meta data I then apply Auto levels to each image in turn, this is a very manual process involving the mouse and the right arrow key to move to the next image, wait for it to be read then press the auto levels button and then right arrow to the next image.

Is there a way to get Aperture to go through all the images in an Album applying the Auto levels command to each image individually.
It may even by by a keystroke macro process if there is such a one for OSX.

I do not want to lift the adjustments from one corrected image and apply them to all the images as this does not reflect the auto needs of each image.

After auto levelling each image I select the images for customised work.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Is There A Library Size Limit? ...

Hello

Is there a limit to the size of a library?

I'm a working photog and use Aperture as my main tool for processing my RAW images. My library is currently 310GB, 162,000 images. I keep everything in the one library as I find it easier to manage and retrieve images as required for myself and my clients. Is there any reason to consider creating another library?

I'm not experiencing any major issues with Aperture, I'm just curious. I'd hate to think that I may be creating a problem for myself down the road.

Thanks

Does Aperture and iPhoto synchronize ...

I have over 26,000 photos and videos in iPhoto. I would like to use Aperture as my main application. After what feels like 3 hours of adding the iPhoto library to Aperture, I am ready to go.

The problem is that if I make an edit add or remove a picture in iPhoto can I make this change synchronize with Aperture so I have an upto date library of iPhoto in Aperture.

I really don't want to have to load everything in everytime I make a change in iPhoto.

Thanks in Advance

Aperture's file naming. Am I doing ...

I hate Aperture's file naming with every ounce of my being. It is so frustrating and this simple item kills my workflow. I am hoping it's me and I'm doing it wrong. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

1. I import the originals. File name is _dsc.0450.nef
2. On import, I change the name to lapresle_20090926_0450 and sort by image date.
3. I edit.
4. I move images around and group them visually by subject: the details, the groomsmen, etc...
5. I rename the files sequentially. So file #450 might now be #575. The new name might be iconex_090926_prf0575 and sort by version name.

The proofs go up and the client orders #575. I open the image in A2, edit with Photoshop and save. I go back to A2 and the stack now has two images, iconex_090926_prf0575 and lapresle_20090926_0450. I export the client's retouched image to a folder on my desktop. My file naming presets are "version name_custom name" with the custom names being 4x6, 5x7, 8x10. When I'm ordering from my lab, each image has the print size in the name so I can keep big orders straight.
After each image that gets an external edit, I have to go into the folder on my desktop and rename the file. Is there any way to have A2 export the image with the name that is visible? Going back in and highlighting and renaming every file to match the proof is so time consuming.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers-Kevin

Lightroom 3 alive at Adobe - Switching ...

Hello there, this is my first post to the Aperture forums ever, even if i've been a fellow user from the beginning... But that might well change soon, as i see that Adobe is really dedicated in making Lightroom the software of choice for photographers, whereas Apple seems to have abandoned ship !

That's not making me very comfortable, as i wasn't interested in switching and going to learn a new soft, but after all if it has to be that way, so be it... sights

Starting today, i'll be beta testing and learning Lightroom 3, running import tests and see how it goes, as i have a 15.000 more library to deal with. I'm more than worried on the experience that will come out of this, as i'll probably loose most of my photo work, not even talking about metadata !

Anyone thinking or running the same process wanna share thoughts about it ?

Camera Support - Olympus e620 ...

Hi All,

I've recently bought an Olympus e620, and Aperture 2.0 thinking there wouldn't be any problems with the camera being supported (given the E-3 is supported, and the formats are the same).

Unfortunately it seems the camera isn't supported, and as such I can't use Aperture for my photos without going through a rather involved conversion process (using Adobe Raw)

Does anyone know of any updates (in beta, perhaps) which are available for use? I'm perfectly happy to put up with bugs if it means I can use my copy of Aperture!

Questions about exporting versions and ...

Hi, I am a user of Aperture 2.

I was exporting versions from my Aperture 2 library since my friend, a window user couldn't read the
Aperture library.(My library is in my external hard disk, a format NTFS)
While exporting versions, I found out that the sizes of versions are almost 2 or 3 times bigger than the masters(original files).
Even the size of the ones' that I didn't retouch nor did anything, got bigger.
Why do they get bigger? Is there any way that I can export the versions without the change of the size?
(Except exporting masters.)

And I found out that using Aperture 2 is very inconvenient since I don't have any mac users around me.
Which means that I cannot open my Aperture library from my friends' computer.
So I'm thinking about switching to Adobe Lightroom. Is there a migrating tool in Lightroom?
Or is there a convenient way to switch?

Thank you!
Best Regards.

Export Master gives corrupt images ...

I am trying to export a master file from Aperture. The resulting file is unreadable (in anything). However, I can locate the original master in the Aperture library package, and it is perfectly OK. It seems that it is something in the export process that is causing this problem. The master file has not been edited or adjusted or tagged or anything. It's just a vanilla JPEG, and I have "Don't include IPTC" set.

It fails on over 1000 (out of 8500 photos) when I export everything, and I believe it is the same files every time. Certainly, the one file I've looked at individually fails every time.

I really like Aperture, but I can't trust something that looks me into its proprietary file structure because I can't export. Help!

GEOTAGGING GEAR

In the final Macworld Keynote, we saw the jump for geotagging your photos in iPhoto. There are plenty of threads around boasting the business benefits of this data, so I won't go into them here, but suffice to say, now that Apple has taken the step of embedding this tool in the consumer software, you know it's around the corner for the next Aperture update.

I've been meaning to get a GPS logger for a while, but when I checked a few months ago the software out there for tacking on Lat/Lon onto your EXIF data was pretty anemic. Now I see there's respectable Mac software for this, and we've got a European tour coming up this summer, so my interest is definitely piqued.

What do you recommend for a GPS logger and geocoding software? The all in one versions I saw in the past (pop in your memory card to the GPS tracker when you're finished shooting) didn't support CF cards or RAW files, so it was out the window. I'd like a logger I can throw in my gear bag for the day and forget about it 'til it's time for upload. I've looked at some of the options listed here:

http://www.trick77.com/2008/07/19/re...-mac/#more-103

and I think I'd prefer HoudahGeo over some of the others because of its versatility and my very positive experience with the user interface in HoudahSpot.

Does anyone else bother with geotagging their images here? Any suggestions? Please in mind, I'd also use this for landscape photography (usually during hiking) along with travel shooting.

Aperture, Snow Leopard and tiredness... ...

It's not a good morning. I just wrote the following to the Aperture team, pretty much out of desperation.

Hi,
I'm writing while waiting for the photos of a conference I shot yesterday to finally import into Aperture. I do a lot of waiting these days. This morning, I had to force quit Aperture twice because it was either hanging or just not seeing the files I wanted to import from my hard drive. So now I'm importing directly from the memory card and lo and behold: what used to be a speedy affair is now slow to the point of ridiculousness.

I love Aperture. It's one of the reasons that made me decide to become a full-time professional photographer. But it's broken. And I don't understand why we're not getting support from Apple.

With Snow Leopard we have problems ranging from printing to performance, to hangs and cpu hogging. Frankly, it's a bit of a nightmare. I'm not sure what to say anymore that hasn't been said. I keep waiting for an update that never comes, for a comment from Joe or anyone at Apple that would at least aknowledge the situation and give us some hope at a possible resolution.

- Hey, look at that: I just had to force quit again. After 10 minutes only 30 files have been imported and cancelling the task made Aperture hang again. Nice. Very productive. Coffee anyone? -

You would think we'd at least get a point update to fix the situation. Heck, just something to give us back black point compensation would be sorta nice. But hey, it's not like we have to print on a regular basis right? And really, what's the point of that feature anyway? Why include at all?

We're left fending for ourselves, scouring the forums and finding workarounds just to get our basic work done.

I'm now honestly desperate and needed to share.

- it's been 45 minutes and I still haven't been able to import my pictures. This time I used my automator workflow (which always does the job) and now Aperture is stuck at "Getting assets for dropped images". It's been stuck for five minutes. Do you really think I have all day? -

I'm so tired guys. It feels like a relationship that I desperately want to work but doesn't. Mariage counseling anyone? Ugh...

EXIF editing in Aperture. ...

Dear members:

I have an urgent situation at hand and any help you can offer me will be appreciated.

My current project requires me to edit EXIF data on photos stored as TIFF files. Some of these are files created by an Olympus camera and originally saved as TIFF. Others are TIFF files created from slide scans using a Nikon 35 mm slide/film scanner.

The files created by the digital camera have date and time stamps that are not correct and need to be modified. The scans from slides don't have any EXIF data and I would like to be able to include it (things such as date, time, model of scanner used, etc,).

Can Aperture edit the EXIF data on TIFF files ?

In case it can't natively do so, would any of you be aware of a plug-in for Aperture that would allow it do so ?

Any suggestions ?

Thanks,

Joseph

Color-managed Printing ...

I use a jpg image with lots of colors and familiar object in it, to check my printing colors from various photo applications. I use an Epson R800 with its latest Epson driver, and when I print from Adobe CS2 or Lightroom using 'application-managed' colors, ie turning color management OFF in the printer driver, I get fine acceptable color. I expected the same in my trial of Aperture.

So using the same image file, I go to print image in Aperture, set the Print Settings to turn color management off, and select the paper profile for Epson Premium Glossy Bst Photo in the Colorsync Profile menu, and then the preview image for the dialog shows a purple-ish badly colored preview! Only when I set the Colorsync Profile to System Managed, do I see a preview that resembles the image file in the view mode in Aperture and in the other applications.

Finally, when i print that image, I get a print that resembles what I am looking for, but is inferior compared to the Lightroom and CS2 prints. it is muddy and dark compared to them.

Can someone straighten me out on the settings that I should use to avoid color management by the printer driver, and have Aperture send a color corrected image to the printer, as I do in Lightroom ad CS2? And finally, why is the print of lower quality than the print I am getting from these other applications? I have tried increasing the Gamma but that doesn't do it.

MobileMe sync problems ...

I've created a couple MobileMe galleries in Aperture, and I'm finding that the syncing process is a bit odd. It seems to always upload more images than I have actually added. For example, I have one gallery that had 14 images and had already been synced the week before. I opened Aperture, added one image to that gallery and clicked the little sync "button". Looking at the activity window, it said it was uploading "1 of 4" images, and (as always) it took a lot longer than it should have. (The first time I published the gallery, with less than 10 images, it took over an hour. I could have manually built the HTML for a basic gallery, scaled several versions of the images and uploaded to my other site via FTP in that same amount of time.)

Anybody know if there is anything to be done about this? Or is this just how it is?

Aperture Server ...

I'm not sure if this already exists but at the moment we have macs with hard drives and aperture librarys on them. Is there a way to have it set up so there is a core computer with the aperture librarys attached, and the computers we work on merely show librarys with reference files. So these thumbnail reference images on the computers we work on, point back to the main core system? So potentially we can have 4 or 5 macs attached through a network to this main core, and none of them have to have the physical library loaded with the hefty images.

I'm hoping we can get this so that it'll speed up the macs we work on because they are sooo slow when using aperture!

Aperture 2.1.4 crash when rating ...

I seem to be having an issue with Aperture since performing the SL update. This issue seems to occur only when I'm rating pictures. Specifically, it always appears to crash when I'm either rejecting or deleting an image from the library. The crash seems to occur about 1 in 10 or 20 reject/delete operations. It's always the same thread that crashes - thread 23 (I have a large number of crash reports to prove it). I have only noticed this issue since upgrading to Snow Leopard. I've tried removing my plugins, which did not seem to fix the issue. Anyone have any experience with this problem?

Large Images and malloc errors ...

as a software engineer, i know that a malloc error means that software could not allocate a chunk of memory big enough to hold a specific piece of data. i'm using Aperture 2.1.? on my MacPro dual quad core and i've got 6GB of RAM. Aperture usually seems to take up about 2GB or so. when i send the 21MP images from my Canon 5DMkII into photoshop, they usually wind up having 6 or 7 layers when i'm done and the resulting images are about 600MB or so. i also shoot a lot of film with my Mamiya 6x7. these negatives are scanned at 2400dpi and result in a 6000x5000 pixel image. again, edited with photoshop with 4 layers or so, i wind up with a 800-1000MB file.

the problem with Aperture is that it fails when generating previews for these images and often fails to load them into the viewer. if this happens, trying to create web galleries or JPG exports for client reviews fails because it can't load these large images. information on the console shows that Aperture is consistently experiencing malloc errors. what i see on-screen is a deep-red image area with the text "Unsupported Image Format". if i quit Aperture and restart, it usually fixes the problem. however, last night when working with some particularly large film scans, i couldn't get it to generate previews successfully until i reduced the file size somewhat (going back to greyscale, reducing some of the layers, although flattening is generally not an option for me...)

so, my question is, if i add more memory (say, get another 4GB taking me up to 10GB total) will Aperture be able to take advantage of this additional RAM? i know that Photoshop sort of has this 3GB limit. i wonder if Aperture has the same issue (with Leopard)? would Snow Leopard and the 64-bit addressing help here? i'm reluctant to upgrade to Snow Leopard because i've seen some issues reported here.

thanks,
scott

Keywords not exporting ...

I have a Project that is behaving oddly. Please know, this is a procedure I routinely perform... but just this ONE project is acting up.

I manage my event shooting on an external drive. I finalize all my sort, edits, adjustments, ratings and keywords while the project is on that drive. Upon completion, I export the project to Library on a different external drive.

Typically, I will Show Package contents on the originating host drive and drag the individual Project to a Library (up and running) on the target drive. I have done this literally hundreds of times without issue. I have even done it with a newer Project that was created/shot after the Project I'm having problems with.

The issue I am having is that my Keywords (assigned to images) are not showing up after the import? They're intact on the original host drive.. but they won't export. I've not seen anything like this before.

I fear I'm missing something obvious (and probably stupid) ... but for the life of me, can't find the hitch. I've even tried exporting to the desktop then importing from within Aperture. To no avail... this keywords aren't sticking.

Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

I've searched all the preferences lists and forum topics I can and I'm not finding a way to reset the style and hopefully the size of the font so I can make it functional again.

Everything seems to be in such a small font. Did I just age a couple of decades or is there a way to make my fonts in finder, the internet, mail and all the rest of the things I get into on the computer big enough for me to see them without zooming in on my screen constantly. Lost Masters After Hard Drive Move ...

I took a copy of my Aperture Library and moved it from my boot drive to a new external 500 gig drive on my G5.

I did the same with iPhoto and had no problem re connecting to the original images.

Within Aperture I have my project structure intact, with all the thumbnails visible but only some of the images show connections to the originals.

I've tried relocate, consolidate and manage reference files, oh and Rebuild at start-up .. nothing worked.

To make matters worse one of these steps exploded out all 18,642 of my images onto the external hard drive. So now when I open Aperture and attempt an import it has to scan 18,642 images before I can touch the application again.

Does anyone have an answer for this or is this a pick and shovel job to get these 18K images back into each of their projects?

Ugh!!!!!

Photos Mysteriously Missing! ...

Yesterday, my girlfriend and I used my laptop as part of a school assignment of hers along with a Canon 5D. We were able to shoot over 300 pictures over four hours. Every once in a while, I would adjust levels on a recently shot image. We stopped tethering, disconnected the camera and closed Aperture. We started to go through the photos tonight but many photos are displaying the Unsupported Image Format message. I knew that Aperture doesn't support many camera RAW formats, but I knew it did support the 5D. It turns out that the RAW files are completely missing from the database, though there are thumbnails for them. I can't export a master or a version of the majority of the images that were shot.

Here's me browsing for them in Terminal, you can see that a large portion of the images are completely missing:

How to delete references to "Offline ...

Howdy,

I have about 200 "Offline" images in my library that have no association with an image in my managed library. Every time I open a project with one of these images in it, AP tries to build a thumbnail of a non-existant image and hangs up.

How do I get rid of these references to "Offline Images" .

When I try to reconnect to these images Aperture needs to be forced quit.

I think I must get rid of the references in my library to these missing "OffLine images".

Lightzone, Aperture, and Snow Leopard ...

After "upgrading" to Snow Leopard, my preferred external editor, Lightzone, will launch but will not open images.

Aperture 2.1.4, Lightzone 3.8, OS 10.6.

Note: this is LightZONE, not LightROOM.

Moving an Aperture library ...

So my 17" MBP Uni is showing as "shipped" and should be with me next week Soooooo. How do I move my Aperture Library/database from my existing 15" MBP (running Leopard) to my new 17" MBP running SnowLeo?

I have all my masters referenced on a 500GB FW drive so hopefully that bit is straight-forward, but due to the problems some people seem to be having with SnowLeo and Aperture, I really want to have an overlap period with Aperture on both machines until I get sufficient confidence to cut loose from Leopard. I understand the licensing restrictions concerning multiple access on the same network but I only need the Leopard library until I'm sure the SnowLeo one behaves as it should.

I'm not going to do the Mac to Mac transfer thing because I know things don't always work perfectly with this, and anyway I'm going to keep the new machine quite clean for Aperture and web development, and leave most of the other stuff seperate on the older machine - hence my question.

So what's involved? Load Ap on the new machine, upgrade to 2.1.4 and then move some pref files? If so which ones guys?
Thanks in advance

Al

Can you run Aperture on more than one ...

I am looking at getting a second mac. Will I need a second copy of Aperture?
If so, could I just use Aperture on the new mac now, or is it permanently tied to the computer it was originally installed on?

Borders on photos ...

Is there a way to make borders around photos that aren't just monochromatic, but similar to borders that appear on pages or keynote, where they look like bent photos?

Borderless printing problems - Aperture ...

Problem: photos don't print borderless. I have selected the appropriate paper from the "paper size" dialog (in my case, "4x6 borderless"). Things used to behave nicely but something has changed after Snow Leopard. The "calibrate" settings do not solve the problem. The border appears only on two edges of the print and the calibrate settings can't move it back. Other software (Preview, Photoshop, etc.) print borderless without issue. Anyone else out there having a similar issue?

Aperture 2.1.4
OS 10.6.1
Canon Pro9000 II, CUPS driver 10.26.0.0

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

I've got a Canon 7D and have found that Aperture does recognise the format when is the raw file going to be updated?

Thanks

Aperture auto-overwrote its library? ...

I opened 'users' in the Hard drive, selected myself, then 'images' and there was the aperture library. I dragged it over to copy it onto an external hard drive, and a message came up saying: "Welcome to Aperture 2.1.4 Your library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of Aperture. Once upgraded, you will not be able to use this library with previous versions of Aperture." It turns out it was an old library from when I had been using the trial version of Aperture, six or eight months ago. I clicked quit, but the next time I launched my application of Aperture, I got the same message. The only options were "quit" or "upgrade" and I was getting tired of the 'quit' option. I clicked upgrade. Then it opened and the only projects listed were from my trial. I can't find where the last half year of data are stored, there is no other 'aperture library' on in my 'images' folder, and that old one was the only one that was there to begin with. So where are all my images? I'd hate to think that Aperture auto-overwrote all my projects simply because I was trying to back up my projects. I simply didn't realize that 'aperture library' would be a trial from two years ago, otherwise I never would have tried to back it up by drag-dropping it onto an external drive. There are several projects with hundreds of images in each- all MIA.

Any solution for Panasonic Raw files ...

Hi folks - in addition to my Nikon cameras I shoot with a Panasonic LX3 and soon a GF-1 - and so far I haven't had any luck getting any sort of raw files from the panasonics to be read by Aperture. I had thought that with Apple's DNG support that there would be a way to convert the files to DNG and then import, but so far I have had no luck.

I realize that the GF1 is brand new, but the LX3 is over a year old and supported by all of Apple's competitors. I really don't want to switch to lightroom, but it is getting harder and harder to stick with Aperture.

Aperture keeps quitting every 30 mins ...

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Testing Vault Integrity? ...

I am replacing an external HD holding my Aperture Vault because the drive is showing signs of failing.

I've copied the Vault from the old drive onto the new one using SuperDuper! and everything looks fine. I opened Aperture, and it recognizes the vault and is ready to copy updates into it.

My question: before I zero out the old drive and thereby destroy the "old" vault, is there any way short of restoring some files from the new vault to test its integrity? Perhaps the broader question is: how do you test the integrity of your vault?

Thanks for any ideas.

Images won't display ...

I have loaded 1563 images into a project. The project shows that there are 1563 images in it, but it will only display 1062 of the images. For some reason these 501 (consecutive) images, although apparently in the project, won't display. I have tried quitting out of Aperture and even shutting down the computer and restarting. No change. The browser is set to display unrated or better so the ratings shouldn't be having any effect, none of the images have been rated anyway. The images were created using a canon 30D and were shot in Canon RAW. Any idea what could be happening? This is very frustrating.
